Business phone system FAQ

Every question teams ask before switching: how fast setup is, whether number porting keeps your existing number (it does, free), what a business phone system costs, and the recording and 911 questions honest providers answer plainly.

Yes. Number porting is free and our team handles the carrier paperwork. Your number stays live during the port, which typically takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on your current carrier. You get a temporary number instantly, so your phone menu and routing are working while the port completes.

About 5 minutes. Pick a local or toll-free number, build your phone menu in the visual builder, and install the app. There is no hardware to ship, no technician visit, and no provisioning cycle. Porting an existing number takes 1 to 2 weeks, but the temporary number works immediately.

No. Phoner runs on the devices your team already owns: iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, or any modern browser. If you prefer physical desk phones, standard SIP desk phones are supported, but nothing about the system requires them.

No contract. Plans are month-to-month, and paying yearly saves about 20 percent (Team is $29 per user per month billed yearly versus $35 monthly). You can add or remove users any month, and you can cancel any time from your account.

Call recording and consent laws vary by state and country. Some US states require one-party consent, others require every participant to consent. Phoner gives you consent tools: an automatic consent announcement before recording starts and per-line recording toggles. You are responsible for lawful use and for getting consent where required. This is not legal advice; our guide to call recording laws by state is a starting point, and a lawyer is the finish line.

Yes. Shared numbers are a Team plan feature: one main company number rings a group of teammates in order or all at once, with statuses so calls skip whoever is busy or off. Everyone can also have a direct line, and the phone menu routes callers between them.

Phoner provides US and Canadian local and toll-free numbers with unlimited calling in the US and Canada. Your team can answer from anywhere in the world on the mobile, desktop, or web apps, and callers from any country can reach your number at their normal international rates.

If you port your number to Phoner, your old carrier line for that number is closed at the end of the port, which is how porting works at every carrier. Until the port completes, your number keeps ringing normally. If you take a new number instead, your existing carrier contract is untouched.

VoIP 911 differs from landline 911: your call is routed based on the address you register with us, not your physical location, and calls cannot connect during an internet or power outage. Register your service address, keep it current, and keep a mobile phone available as a backup for emergencies. We state this plainly because every honest VoIP provider must.
