Most single numbers port in 1 to 2 weeks. Toll-free numbers and multi-line landline accounts can take a little longer. A temporary number is assigned while you wait, usually the same business day, not instantly.
Phoner charges nothing to port in, for any number type. Check your old contract, though: some carriers bill an early termination or release fee on their side.
