Ooma vs Grasshopper Pricing - Per User vs Flat Rate

Ooma Office costs $19.95 per user per month on Essentials, $24.95 on Pro and $29.95 on Pro Plus, billed monthly with no contract. Grasshopper does not bill per user at all: it charges a flat rate for the whole account, $14 a month for True Solo, $25 for Solo Plus and $55 for Small Business, all quoted at the annual rate. That difference in pricing shape decides the comparison. Grasshopper is cheaper at every team size we priced, from one person to ten. Ooma costs more because it sells a full phone service per person, with a desk phone option, video meetings from Pro, call recording and a free toll-free number, and it asks for no annual commitment.

Ooma vs Grasshopper pricing, side by side

The first column is the trap. Ooma's price is per person and month to month. Grasshopper's is per account and annual, and Grasshopper says only that annual billing saves "over 20%" against its monthly rate, without printing the monthly figures in the view we captured.

Two add-ons change the Grasshopper total. Extra phone numbers are $9 a month each on every plan, and business texting, unlimited on every plan, carries a $19.50 one-time registration fee plus $1.50 a month. Those are the US carrier registration costs for business texting, and every provider passes some version of them through. Ooma lists an enterprise tier with custom pricing on top, plus paid AI answering add-ons on every plan.

Is Grasshopper cheaper than Ooma?

Yes, at every team size, and the gap widens as you hire. Grasshopper's Solo Plus covers unlimited users for $25 a month plus $3 per extension beyond three, so a ten-person office with one extension each pays about $46 a month before texting. The same ten people on Ooma Essentials pay $199.50, or $249.50 on Pro if they need to text. The table assumes one extension per person on Grasshopper and the cheapest plan that carries texting on each service.

Grasshopper's figures are annual rates with the $1.50 monthly texting fee added and the one-time $19.50 left out. Ooma's are month to month, because Ooma sells no annual plan. Taxes and regulatory fees are extra on both. At four people and beyond, Grasshopper Solo Plus with extra extensions stays cheaper than Small Business until you need more than one number, at which point the four numbers bundled into Small Business start to pay for themselves at $9 each.

What does Ooma include that Grasshopper does not?

A phone service rather than a number. Ooma Office is sold per person, and each user gets an extension on a system that runs desk phones, the mobile app and, from Pro, a desktop app. Ooma lists 911 service, free porting of your existing number, a free toll-free number on every plan, digital fax and analog fax machine support. If your office still has desk phones on the wall and a fax line, Ooma replaces all of it.

Video meetings and recording. Ooma Pro adds video meetings for up to 25 participants and call recording, and Pro Plus raises video to 100 participants and adds call queuing, team chat, hot desking and CRM integration with Salesforce, HubSpot and Microsoft Dynamics 365. Grasshopper's published cards list no video and no call queue.

No annual commitment. Every Ooma plan card says "No Contract Necessary", and the posted price is the monthly price. Grasshopper's headline rates require paying for the year, backed by a 7-day money-back guarantee.

What does Grasshopper include that Ooma does not?

A flat bill that does not grow with headcount. Solo Plus and Small Business both carry unlimited users, so the fifth and fifteenth person cost the same as the first, apart from $3 per extension on Solo Plus. For a crew, a family business or a practice where several people pick up one line from their own cell phones, that is the cheapest shared business line on the market.

Texting on the entry plan. Unlimited business texting is on every Grasshopper plan, including the $14 True Solo, once the registration fee is paid. Ooma holds texting back to Pro at $24.95 per user, capped at 250 messages a month, or 1,000 on Pro Plus.

Simplicity. Grasshopper is built to put a business number on the phones your team already carries, with extensions and a greeting in front. There is no hardware to buy and no per-seat licensing to manage.

Which should you buy?

Buy Grasshopper if one to ten people share a business number from their own phones, you want texting included, and you are happy to pay for the year. At $25 a month for the whole team it is very hard to beat on price, and we would not argue otherwise.
